When it comes to protecting the environment, why let it stop with your furniture? Sustainability is becoming increasingly more important, especially when making purchasing decisions. At Habbio, every sofa is designed and manufactured with the environment (and you!) in mind.
In this blog, we explore the world of sustainability and sofas, the benefits of choosing sustainable furniture and what to look out for.
A sustainable sofa is a sofa that has been designed and manufactured with the environment in mind. From choosing eco-friendly materials, ethical production and manufacturing processes, end-of-life considerations, durability and quality in mind to minimise the need to replace often. Read our story to find out more about your sustainability journey.
Lower carbon footprint
One of the main benefits of choosing sustainable furniture is that it can help reduce your carbon footprint. Locally sourced and renewable materials help reduce environmental impact, helping combat climate change.
Promote a circular economy
Choosing eco-friendly furniture plays a very important role in promoting a circular economy. This is where materials are reused, repurposed and recycled after use therefore creating a closed-loop that minimises waste. This helps reduce the strain on natural resources and promotes the longevity of materials.
Durability and Longevity
Sustainable furniture is built to last, with higher quality materials used and superior craftsmanship. It is built to be durable to withstand usage and stand the test of time. This helps reduce the need for replacements, which further minimises the impact on the environment (and saves your bank account!).
Fewer harsh chemicals
Most sustainable sofas are made with materials and processes that have fewer toxic chemicals – not only making them better for the environment but also for your health.
Ethical manufacturing
Sustainable furniture is made through ethical manufacturing processes that minimise energy consumption during production, reduce the amount of waste during manufacture and are conducted in factories with fair labour practices.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that sustainable furniture is more expensive. While some sustainable furniture may come with a higher price tag, just like other furniture, the price will depend on quality, brand and location.
When investing in high-quality, sustainable furniture not only are you getting a great looking sofa, you’re getting one that lasts, so you won’t be purchasing replacements as often.
When buying a sustainable sofa, there are some key things to look out for. As experts in the sustainable sofa industry, we’ve listed some of them below.
What materials are being used?
The first thing to look at is the type of material being used to build your new sofa.
At Habbio, everything that goes into our furniture is recycled, or sustainably sourced if a recycled alternative isn’t available. We also use 90% fewer chemicals than other manufacturers – choosing natural, non-toxic and biodegradable alternatives wherever we can.
Eco-friendly / sustainability certifications
Look for companies that are certified by environmental organisations, for example, materials that are FSC certified are certified by the Forest Standards Commission, meaning the products are sourced in a way that protects and manages biodiversity. Is the company you’re purchasing from vegan friendly certified? This means no materials have been made from or harmed animals.
Local manufacture
Furniture that is locally manufactured helps reduce the environmental impact involved in transporting the materials and the sofa.
At Habbio, we’re committed to protecting the British manufacturing industry for the people and communities that rely on it. Keeping our workshop in the UK also means we can look after our people properly – with safe conditions, pay that is at least 20% higher than the living wage and no zero hours contracts.
Quality reassurance / guarantees
Look for companies that offer quality reassurances, for example, a certain number of years warranty or quality guarantees.
At Habbio, we have a 15 year frame guarantee on every one of our sofas. Being handmade in the UK by expert craftspeople, we guarantee only the best quality.
At Habbio, we have a range of different sofas to choose from, in a range of colours to suit everyone’s personal taste.
We believe sofas should be comfy and convenient. Handcrafted in the UK, comfort is at the forefront of our minds. Alongside comfort, we never compromise on sustainability, meaning all sofas are hand-crafted with the greatest commitment to the planet.
All our flat pack sofas can be disassembled, carried by two people and reassembled again in a new space, meaning you’ll never be forced to leave a Habbio behind when you decide to move. Our sofas squeeze through the narrowest of corridors and up the steepest of stairs, designed for minimum hassle and maximum comfort.
A lot of our sofas are modular which means you can add extra units should you ever want to increase the size of your sofa. We wanted to design a sofa that grows with you and lasts for years to come, no matter your change in circumstances.
We also have two seaters, three seaters, corner sofas, chaise sofas and sofa beds to choose from.
