What makes a sofa sustainable?
A sustainable sofa is a sofa that is designed and manufactured with the environment in mind. Using materials that are renewable, recycled or reclaimed while focusing on using greener, more sustainable methods of production to create long lasting furniture.

Why is choosing a sustainable sofa important?
Furniture can be harmful to the environment at the end of its life. 90% of furniture sold in the UK ends up discarded because it doesn’t last, or isn’t recyclable or biodegradable. Some reasons why you should buy sustainably include:
Reduce furniture waste in landfill
Sustainable furniture helps reduce waste, by creating furniture that is designed to last. Investing in well made, long lasting furniture will reduce the amount of times it will need replacing – saving you money in the long run and preventing more furniture ending up in landfill. At Habbio, each of our sofas have a 15-year guarantee but also the ability to grow with your needs – add an extra unit at any time. If you’re thinking about investing in a Habbio sofa and have concerns over your old one, we can collect your non-Habbio sofa and assess it for suitability for charity donation, repurposing or recycling.

Using sustainable materials that are responsibility sourced help reduce the impact on the environment. A lot of sustainable sofas have been made using recycled materials, which helps reduce the impact from mining, deforestation and textile production.

Choosing sustainable materials
When choosing a sustainable sofa, there a few things to look out for, including:
FSC certified woods
Look for frames and other wooden accessories that are FSC certified. At Habbio, our frames are made from only FSC certified beech and other FSC hardwoods.
What is FSC certified?
Materials that are FSC certified means they have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC certification ensures that forest-derived products, such as wood and paper come from forests that are managed to preserve biodiversity, provide benefits to local communities, and support long-term ecological health.
Recycled fabrics
Are their fabrics made from other recycled materials or can be recycled later down the line? All of our fabrics at Habbio are made from recycled plastic bottles or recycled textiles, Habbio’s 12 fabrics are good for the planet and feel softer than a peach. Did we mention that our fabrics are stain resistant and super hard-wearing too?
Non-Toxic Chemicals & Dyes
Do they use harsh chemicals and dyes on their sofas or do they opt for non-toxic instead? At Habbio, we also use 90% fewer chemicals than other manufacturers – choosing natural, non-toxic and biodegradable alternatives wherever we can.
